Completing an unfinished project requires balancing existing architectural patterns with clean refactoring rather than impulsively rewriting working modules.

Complete user journeys, implement automated tests, and deploy to production.
Projects stall at roughly the same place: the visible features are built and the invisible ones are not. What remains is error handling, edge cases, permissions, email delivery, payment failure states, and everything that only matters when real people use the thing.
This is why a project that looks nearly finished can need another two months. It is also why the previous developer's estimate of 'about a week left' was sincere and wrong.
The single most useful thing you can do before hiring is write down what has to be true for the project to be done. Not features — conditions.
There is a strong pull, once new eyes are on the project, to also fix the things that were always slightly wrong and add the features that were cut. It feels efficient because the developer is already in there.
It is the most common way a rescue turns into a second stalled project. Finish the original scope, ship it, and treat everything else as a separate phase with its own decision.
